Defenition of  news item text

News item text merupakan jenis teks yang memberikan informasi tentang suatu peristiwa/kejadian yang dianggap penting pada suatu waktu sehingga layak diberitakan.

Social function of news item text

News item text bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi kepada pembaca atau pendengar. The purpose of news item text is to inform the readers about newsworthy events of the day.

Biasanya, news item text akan memberikan informasi mengenai peristiwa terbaru/terkini dan faktual. Dengan begitu, masyarakat bisa selalu update mengenai kejadian di suatu tempat.

 Language features of news item text

Adapun ciri-ciri kebahasaan dari teks news item, yaitu:

1. Mencantumkan informasi sebagai headline berita. Mengingat news item text adalah teks yang berisi  berita-berita teraktual yang disajikan sesuai fakta dan akurat, maka headline utama dalam news item text harus berisi informasi bukan sebuah cerita khayalan ataupun opini.
2. Menggunakan action verbs. Contoh action verbs dalam teks news item : “We definitely need to adapt the way we build buildings, the way we operate and look at some of our infrastructure in the light of what seems to be an increasing frequency of these kinds of events,” he said. 4. Menggunakan saying verbs. Contoh dari saying verbs yaitu, respond, say, answer, ask, reply, tell, etc. Namun, dalam news item text, umumnya saying verbs tersebut akan ditulis dalam bentuk past tense. Misalnya say menjadi said, lalu tell menjadi told, etc. Saying verbs biasa disebut juga reporting verb dalam penggunaan reported speech. Kalau dalam bahasa Indonesia-nya, kamu pasti sering menemukan saying verbs seperti diberitakan, dikatakan, mengatakan, diceritakan, dsb. Contoh dalam kalimat bahasa Inggris: Japanese defence forces will participate for the first time in military exercises in Indonesia next month alongside the United States and Australia, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Wednesday after talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

 5. Teks ini berisi fakta atau membahas informasi yang disampaikan masih baru/hangat dan bersifat penting (urgent) sehingga kita menggunakan Simple Present  Tense. Selain itu, news item text ditulis dengan simple present tense untuk menggambarkan kejadian yang masih berlangsung hingga saat ini. Namun, sering juga, news item text ditulis menggunakan simple past tense Karena, berita baru ditulis saat peristiwa sudah terjadi.

6. Menggunakan passive voices. News item text menceritakan sesuatu yang sudah terjadi lalu diberitakan. Sehingga penulis harus menggunakan passive verb dalam penulisan kalimatnya.

Struktur teks dari news item text adalah Main Event/Newsworthy Event, Background Event/Elaboration, dan Sources.

Main Event/Newsworthy Event

Struktur news item text yang pertama adalah main event. Nah, yang dimaksud dengan main event/newsworthy event adalah inti berita. Main event tersebut menjelaskan ringkasan berita yang akan dijelaskan.

Elaboration/Background Event

Berisi tentang rentetan peristiwa lain yang melatarbelakangi peristiwa utama terjadi. Peristiwa lain yang memberikan pengaruh sehingga peristiwa utama terjadi.  Penjelasan mengenai latar belakang adanya peristiwa tersebut; orang-orang yang terlibat dalam peristiwa tersebut; tempat peristiwa terjadi; dan lain-lain. Singkatnya, background event ini berisi latar belakang peristiwa yang terjadi. Mulai dari apa dan siapa saja yang terlibat, di mana, kapan, mengapa, serta bagaimana peristiwa tersebut bisa terjadi. Struktur ini harus tertulis secara lengkap agar pembaca dapat memahami keseluruhan teks dengan mudah dan value berita dapat tersampaikan dengan baik.

Sources

Berisi tentang pernyataan sumber berita. Bisa berupa komentar pelaku, saksi, pendapat para ahli dan juga pihak yang dianggap berwenang dan lain-lain.

On Wednesday, a dramatic accident occurred when a mouse deer crashed into the windscreen of a bus in Johnstown. the mouse deer jumped inside before going down.

Background Event

The accident occurred when a bus was making a routine trip in the Pennsylvania area. There were three passengers sitting in the back row on the bus.

As reported, there were no fatalities in the accident. The transport authority said the bus driver then opened the door and the mouse deer jumped out.
