SPOOF TEXT

Defenition of  Spoof Text

Spoof text adalah salah satu jenis teks dalam bahasa Inggris yang di bagian akhirnya terdapat twist atau kejutan yang lucu. Kejutan tersebut merupakan kejadian yang tidak dapat diduga yang membuat cerita atau teks tersebut lucu. Dalam bahasa Inggris, spoof text dikenal juga dengan humor, joke, anecdote, parody, atau funny story.

Social function of Spoof Text

Tujuan dari spoof text tersendiri adalah untuk menghibur orang lain dengan cerita yang lucu. Biasanya spoof text merupakan cerita nyata yang terjadi di masa lalu dengan akhir yang tidak terduga dan lucu.

Language features of Spoof Text

Ciri ciri kebahasaan dari spoof text yaitu:

1. Focusing on people, animals or certain things

Karena spoof text menceritakan sebuah kejadian lucu, maka berkaitan erat dengan orang, hewan atau objek yang jadi karakternya. Misalnya seperti pada cobtoh berikut:

Early one morning, a mother went in to wake up her son.

“Wake up, son. It’s time to go to school!”

“But why, Mom? I don’t want to go.”

“Give me two reasons why you don’t want to go.”

“Well, the kids hate me for one, and the teachers hate me, too!”

“Oh, that’s no reason not to go to school. Come on now and get ready.”

“Give me two reasons why I should go to school.”

“Well, for one, you’re 52 years old. And for another, you’re the Principal!”

2. Using action verb

Action verb adalah kata kerja yang menandakan tindakan yang bisa kamu lakukan dan terlihat oleh orang lain. Misalnya seperti pada contoh berikut ini:

“Wake up, son. It’s time to go to school!”

“Oh, that’s no reason not to go to school. Come on now and get ready.”

3. Using adverb of time

Adverb of time adalah kata keterangan penunjuk waktu, yang biasanya kamu ketahui dengan yesterday, at nine, late, weeks ago, dan lain-lain. Misalnya:

“Early one morning, a mother went in to wake up her son.”

4. Using simple past tense

Karena menceritakan sebuah kejadian, terdapat spoof text menggunakan simple past tense di dalam kalimatnya. Simple past tense memiliki rumus sbuject + verb 2 + complement atau subject + be + complement. 

Berikut contohnya:

“Early one morning, a mother went in to wake up her son”

5. Using chronological connectives

Salah satu ciri spoof text adalah menceritakan kejadian sesuai urutan waktu kejadian. Oleh karena itu, terdapat kata hubung kronologis yang menyatakan urutan terjadinya peristiwa, seperti then, after, next, dan lain-lain. Contohnya dalam kalimat adalah:

“After a while Abu Ali said to himself, “I must make sure all my donkeys are here.” And he turned round to count them.”

Generic Structure of Spoof Text

Struktur Spoof Text sebagai berikut:

1. Orientation 

Orientation berada pada paragraf pertama. Paragraf ini berisi tentang informasi terkait siapa saja pelaku yang ada dalam cerita. Selain itu, di dalamnnya juga terdapat informasi terkait kapan dan di mana cerita ini berlangsung. Jadi pembaca akan mengetahui siapa saja tokohnya, tempat kejadian, dan waktu kejadian cerita.

2. Events 

Paragraf selanjutnya akan membicarakan tentang apa saja hal yang sudah terjadi. Apa saja yang sudah dilakukan oleh pelaku yang terdapat dalam cerita. Biasanya hal-hal yang terjadi di dalam spoof text akan disampaikan secara berurutan waktu kejadian.

3. Twist

Paragraf terakhir dari spoof text berupa kejadian atau keadaan yang mengejutkan dan akan menjadi akhir dari cerita. Kejadian atau keadaan ini harus berupa sesuatu yang tidak diketahui atau diduga-duga oleh pembaca.

Berdasarkan struktur ini, spoof text punya kemiripan dengan recount text. Hal ini dikarenakan keduanya sama-sama memiliki bagian orientation dan bagian event. Selain itu keduanya mengeksplorasi kejadian yang sudah terjadi di masa lalu, dapat berupa cerita imajinatif atau cerita nyata.

Tetapi kita dapat membedakan spoof text dengan recount text dari tujuannya dan struktur teksnya. Spoof text bertujuan hanya untuk menghibur pembaca dengan paragraf akhir teksnya berupa kejutan yang tidak diduga pembaca. Sedangkan recount text bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi mengenai suatu kejadian pada pembaca atau menghibur pembaca, dan paragraf akhirnya berupa reorientation atau rangkuman dan kesimpulan dari keseluruhan cerita.

Types of Twists in Spoof Text (Tipe-tipe Twist dalam Spoof Text)

Spoof text sendiri tidak memiliki jenis-jenis yang berbeda, tetapi twist atau kejutan yang ada di spoof text terdapat beberapa macam, yaitu sebagai berikut:

1. Humorous Twist

Banyak cerita dalam bahasa Inggris yang mengandung kejutan dengan akhiran yang menyenangkan, mengharukan dan menyejukkan hati. Tipe humorous ini adalah tipe yang akhiran ceritanya lucu. Kadang-kadang disebut juga sebagai lighthearted twist.

2. Ironic Twist

Meskipun banyak akhiran cerita bahasa Inggris berupa hal yang membuat kita bahagia dan menyejukkan hati, ternyata nggak semua begitu, lho. Ada yang berupa ironis, yaitu biasanya yang menunjukkan sisi gelap dari sifat alamiah manusia.

3. Misconception Twist

Selain twist yang membuat akhir cerita lucu dan ironis, terdapat juga miskonsepsi. Yaitu ketika narator memiliki informasi yang salah, yang dibangun sejak awal cerita, sehingga membentuk pemahaman atau persepsi yang keliru sepanjang cerita berjalan, dan memberikan akhiran yang tidak terduga. Misalnya seperti hantu yang tidak mengetahui dirinya sudah mati.

1. Counting Donkeys

One day Abu Ali went to the fair and bought nine donkeys. He rode home on one of them the rest of the donkeys followed behind.

After a while, Abu Ali said to himself, “I must make sure all my donkeys are here.” And he turned round to count them.
“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Oh! Where’s number nine?” Abu Ali cried
He jumped down from his donkey. He looked behind the rocks and behind the trees. But there was no donkey to be seen.
“I’ll count them again,” Abu Ali said. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Oh, he must have come back.”
So Abu Ali climbed back onto the donkey and trotted away.
After a while, he counted his donkeys again. He counted only eight! Once more he looked behind the rocks and behind the trees. But there was no donkey to be seen.
“I will count again,” he said, and this time there were nine.

Just then Abu Ali saw his friend Musa walking along the road. “Musa,” he called. “Help me to count my donkeys. I keep losing one. When I stop to count I have only eight, but when I get down looking for the ninth, there he is again!”
“Well, I can see ten donkeys, Abu Ali,” laughed Musa. “And the tenth donkey’s name is Abu Ali.”

2. What Time Is It?

A tramp lied down and slept in the park. He had been sleeping for about 5 minutes when a couple walked by. The man stopped, woke the tramp up, and asked him, “Excuse me. Do you know what the time is?” The tramp replied, “I’m sorry – I don’t have a watch, so I don’t know the time.”
The man apologized for waking the tramp and the couple walked away.

The tramp lay down again, and after a few minutes went back to sleep. Just then, a woman, who was out walking her dog, shook the tramp’s shoulder until he woke up again.
The woman said, “I’m sorry to trouble you, but I’m afraid I’ve lost my watch – do you happen to know the time?” The tramp was a little annoyed at being woken up again, but he politely told the woman that he didn’t have a watch and didn’t know the time.
After the woman had gone, the tramp had an idea.

He opened the bag that contained all his possessions and got out a pen, a piece of paper, and some string. On the paper, he wrote down, ‘I do not have a watch. I do not know the time’.
He then hung the paper round his neck and eventually dropped it off again.

After about 15 minutes, a policeman who was walking through the park noticed the tramp asleep on the bench, and the sign around his neck.
He woke the tramp up and said, “I read your sign. I thought you’d like to know that it’s 2:30 p.m.”

3. The Phone is Off

Soon after he left college, Dave found one of his uncles who was very rich and had no children of his own died and left him a lot of money, so he decided to set up his own real estate agency.

Dave found a nice office. He bought some new furniture and moved in. he had only been there for e few hours when he heard someone coming toward the door of his office.
“It must be my first customer,” Dave thought. He quickly picked up the telephone and pretended to be very busy answering an important call from someone in New York who wanted to buy a big and expensive house in the country.

The man knocked at the door while this was going on. He came in and waited politely for Dave to finish his conversation on the phone. Then the man said to Dave; “I am from the telephone company and I was sent here to connect your telephone.”

Read the following text to answer questions number 1 to 3!

Once, I had some guests from overseas. They went to Jakarta for five days and they asked me to book a hotel. I called the customer service and booked five rooms; four for the guests and one for me.

On the arrival day, I picked them up at the airport and took them to the hotel. The receptionist gave me five key cards to access our rooms. I took one card and passed the other four to my guests. Then, we went to our rooms. I had never used a key card before but I thought I could use it easily. In front of the door, I stood up for a while and guessed how to use the card. I tried to find a slot but I could not make it. I slid the card in a crevice but it seemed not right.

My guest came out from her room and she knew that I had a problem with the key card. She then asked for the card and touch it to a sensor under the handle. It was that easy!

Read the following text to answer questions number 4 to 5!

Last week I took my five-year old son, Willy, to a musical instrument store in my hometown. I wanted to buy him a set of junior drum because his drum teacher advised me to buy him one. Willy likes listening to music very much. He also likes asking me everything he wants to know. Even his questions sometimes seem precocious for a boy of his age. He is very inquisitive.

We went there by car. On the way, we saw a policeman standing near a traffic light regulating the passing cars and other vehicles. He blew his whistle now and then.

Seeing the policeman blowing his whistle, Willy asked me at once, “Dad, why is the policeman using a whistle, not a drum?”

Hearing his unexpected question I answered reluctantly, “Because he is not Phil Collins!”
